Welcome to the Faculty of Social Sciences

The Faculty of Social Sciences at Flinders University is at the forefront of teaching, research, scholarship and professional activity in the social sciences.  Some of Australia’s most prominent researchers, educators, scholarly writers, consultants and media commentators serve as academic staff members in the Faculty, along with a dedicated and professional team of technical and administrative staff.  The Faculty’s two hundred plus staff serve more than 3,000 students.

Among the Faculty’s distinctive features are

  • sponsorship of three of the University's Areas of Strategic Research Investment: Applied Cognitive Psychology, Flinders International Asia Pacific, Social Monitoring and Policy Futures Network
  • a focus on the Asia-Pacific region, including South Australia's centre for the study of Indonesia;
  • South Australia's only programs in Sociology, American Studies, and graduate-entry Social Work;
  • offshore teaching programs in Singapore, Beijing and Tianjin;
  • the National Institute of Labour Studies: Australia’s leading research and consulting centre on work and industrial relations;
  • an outstanding School of Psychology offering innovative degrees and world-class research;
  • growing links with employers, high schools, TAFE and international partners.

The Faculty will continue to encourage excellence.  It extends its welcome to students, and to academic, professional, business, government and community visitors, from Australia, the Asia-Pacific region, and the rest of the world.
