School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management
Computer Replacement Policy

1. Each year, the School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management will bid for funds from the Faculty’s Basic and Minor Equipment allocations to replace staff computers. Bids will follow the provisions of the School’s Computer Replacement Policy set out here and will follow the computer replacement schedule provided in the table below.

2. Depending on the outcome of Basic and Minor Equipment allocations and subject to the availability of funds, the School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management undertakes to support the replacement of computers used by academic and technical staff for work-related purposes.

3. The School will make available $2000 to each staff member whose computer is more than four years old. Up to $2500 may be allocated if the staff member can demonstrate that they have a dedicated teaching-related need for additional computing capacity.

4. The funds provided under this policy may be used only for the acquisition of processing units, disk drives and writers and monitors. Unless a good case for a portable machine is made in writing to the Head of School, it is expected that the funds will be used to purchase desk-top computers, rather than laptop/notebook computers. Staff may ‘top-up’ the School funds with grant, consulting and other moneys to upgrade their new computer’s features. Funds under this policy cannot be used for the purchase of printers.

5. Computers replaced under the terms of this policy are expected to ‘trickle down’ within the School as determined by the Head of School.

6. It is generally expected the new appointees to the School will be provided with a new computer and related equipment from the Faculty’s Basic and Minor Equipment allocation to the School.

7. The policy does not cover adjunct staff, honorary fellows and casual employees.

8. The policy does not apply to staff with contracts of less than 50%. Staff on such a contract may negotiate some arrangement with the Head of School, depending on their individual circumstances.
