Current Teaching

  • My major teaching at the undergraduate level is Demography PPHR 2001 a second year topic which I teach jointly with Gour Dasvarma who coordinates the topic.
  • At the postgraduate level my major teaching responsibility is the Masters level topic Human Resource Development PPHR 9006 which provides an analysis of human resource development issues and planning with special reference to the Asia Pacific region. I teach the human resource development, labour force analysis and educational planning sections of this topic and Gour Dasvarma teaches the section on health and nutrition.
  • I also teach jointly with Gour Dasvarma the Masters level topic Population Studies PPHR 9004 which provides a non-statistical introduction to the field of population studies.
  • In addition I currently teach and coordinate the Masters level topic Population and Environment PPHR 9013. This teaching of this topic is organised jointly with several academic staff from the School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management and introduces the basic concepts of ecosystems and the key inter-relationships between population change and the environment.
  • In most years I also teach and coordinate the Masters level topics of Research Methods in Population Studies PPHR 9024 and Population Mobility PPHR 9008, but these two topics are not offered in 1999.

Consultancies

  • 1994-99 - Consultant to SAGRIC International Pty Ltd, Adelaide; Population and Family Planning Project, Papua New Guinea (Funded by AusAID - World Bank)
  • 1998 - Consultant and facilitator for CMPS & F Pty Ltd, SAGRIC International, Sinclair Knight Merz, United Water International Pty Ltd in their Singapore Australia Third Country Training Programme - Wastewater Management Course, held in Singapore and Adelaide, October-November 1998.
  • 1986 - Member of an Australian International Development Assistance Bureau (AIDAB) evaluation team which carried out a review for the Department of Foreign Affairs of Australian Government assistance to the Indonesian Social Sciences.
  • 1980-86 - Consultant to the Population Study Centre at the University of Brawijawa, Malang , East Java. This position was funded by the International Development Program (IDP) to develop postgraduate teaching in demography and demographic research.

Consultancy Capabilities

  • Development of research and postgraduate teaching capabilities at the University level in developing countries.
  • Labour force and environmental problems and issues associated with rapid urbanisation and with the development of mega-urban metropolitan regions in the Asia-Pacific region.

Current and Recent Scholarly Activities

  • I am currently engaged in updating my ongoing research on environmental issues in the Asia-Pacific region for the next edition of 'The Far East and Australasia 2000' published by Europa Publications.
  • I am also continuing my research on inmigration to Surabaya and the development of the mega-urban region of Surabaya-Malang in East Java, Indonesia.
