Research
The History Department has an active and productive program of research
driven by the varied interests of the members of staff. See staff profiles for details of individual staff research
interests. The History Department has consistently achieved a higher than
faculty average rate of publications and grant funds for several years.
A number of Visiting Scholars are associated with the
Department pursuing their projects towards publication.
Postgraduate study in History can
be undertaken supervised by any of the Departments staff. In addition,
arrangements for joint supervision linked with American Studies, Womens
Studies , Australian Studies, Latin American Studies and other schools and departments
can be arranged. There is a lively and substantial number of students currently
enrolled in postgraduate study engaged in researching a variety of topics. See
Postgraduate students for information on them and their topics.
The Department conducts a lively seminar program weekly in term on Friday
mornings at 11.15 am, which is open to all comers. It is currently managed by a
team of postgraduate students. This Seminar is the longest-running in the
University, with an unbroken life of possibly twenty five years. A string of
papers and books have begun their life in this supportively critical forum.
The Department is aided by the resources of the JM
Main fund for the acquisition of materials relevant to the study of
Australian history. The University Library already possesses a complete set of
the Australian Joint Copying Project microfilms, about 8000 reels of microfilm.
