Higher Degree by Research
The National Institute of Labour Studies is situated within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Flinders University of South Australia. It was established in 1972 and has since gained a reputation for being at the forefront of labour market research in an extremely competitive environment.
Its dynamic research interests and areas of specialisation include:
- Industrial relations reform
- The changing nature of employment arrangements
- Job related training
- The labour market performance of disadvantaged groups
- Labour market policy research
- Human resources management
- Employee opinion surveys
- Aged Care
NILS is keen to develop the research capabilities of undergraduate students
and offers a Summer Scholarship to those intending to enrol in an Honours degree.
This enables successful candidates to hone their research and report writing
skills while making valuable contributions to various projects. The exposure
to the work environment provides students with the opportunity to achieve excellent
results in their Honours year. On completion of the Summer Scholarship students
are offered on-going contract work in NILS.

candidates are based in NILS.
NILS comprises a small team of academic and support
staff all of whom are highly regarded in their fields of expertise.
Working as a cohesive team underpins much of the success of NILS and both staff
and students are encouraged to contribute their expertise and skills to achieve
the success of various research projects. NILS boasts many ex-members who have
continued to develop their careers in their chosen fields and who are well respected
and hold influential positions in the workforce.
