The Labour Force Experience of New Migrants
Department of Immigration, Indigenous and Multicultural Affairs (DIMIA)
Two cohorts of migrants to Australia have been surveyed in detail by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs. The first cohort arrived in 1994/5 and was surveyed three times over the subsequent 4 years. The second cohort arrived in 2000 and has been surveyed six months after arrival (a second survey was done in mid-2001, though the data are not yet available).
NILS has analysed in depth the way in which the two cohorts have settled into the labour market. For the first cohort, this has included telling the story of how their experience changed over their first four years in Australia. The outcomes for the second cohort have been compared with those for the first cohort (generally, they are much better). The analysis has been done separately for the main visa groups, and much of it has also distinguished the experience of women from that of men.
The final report of this research is available from the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs.
