Expertise & Consultancies

Bill Martin was appointed Principal Research Fellow at NILS in 2003. He is also Associate Professor of Sociology at Flinders University, where he has taught in the Department of Sociology since 1990.

Associate Professor Martin's research interests have centred around the experience of work and the labour market, particularly amongst professionals and managers. With Professor Judy Wajcman (ANU), he has undertaken major research on the work and career experiences of managers and professionals in large Australian companies. This research has produced significant publications and is ongoing. He has also analysed ABS data on employment and earnings trends amongst managers and professionals and published a number of papers on this issue.   Previous research included an examination of sources of change in the distribution of employment in the United States. His new research examines the changing transition to retirement, particularly amongst managers.

Associate Professor Martin has held significant administrative positions at Flinders University.   He has been Head of the Department of Sociology, and Associate Head (Research) of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and has served on many University committees. He was Treasurer and a member of the Executive of The Australian Sociological Association for a number of years, and is currently a co-editor of its main publication, the Journal of Sociology .
