Expertise & Consultancies

Dr Yan Tan is a human geographer and demographer. She joined NILS in April 2004. In 2004, she received the prestigious John Lewis Silver Medal, awarded by the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia for academic excellence and contribution to population and development studies.

Dr Tan’s research has been chiefly in the fields of Human Geography and Demography, focusing in particular on, for China: migration and resettlement, regional development, sustainability planning in relation to the environment, population trends (especially population mobility) and their implications in China; for Australia: ageing, its changing patterns, causes and implications for social and economic change, and; in general: social applications of geographic information systems (GIS). She has published a number of articles in international journals, conference papers and reports in these areas.

Since joining NILS, she has been actively involved in several major research projects. These include: A Well-skilled Future: Tailoring VET to the Emerging Labour Market; Forecasts of Labour Supply for the Greater Metropolitan Area of New South Wales; The Labour Force Outlook in the Minerals Resources Sector: 2005 to 2015; University Employment Review to 2016; and 2007 National Aged Care Workforce Census and Survey. Currently, as one of two Chief Investigators, she is carrying out an Australian Research Council (ARC)-Discovery project on the effects of child disability on the labour market outcomes of carers in Australia.

Yan has worked as a consultant to the Emerging Social Issues Division of the UNESCAP since 2006. Since the beginning of 2006, she has been invited as a referee to review manuscripts for a number of journals, including Population and Environment, GeoForum, Population Studies, and Papers in Regional Science. She is a member of the Institute of Australian Geographers, the Australian Population Association, Australian Urban and Regional Information Systems Association, and the ARC/NHMRC Research Network in Ageing Well.
