Project
Self-forgiveness as a restorative justice process.
Most scholarship concerning forgiveness has focused on the interpersonal dimension of forgiveness, whilst neglecting the intrapersonal dimension known as self-forgiveness. That the body of literature regarding self-forgiveness is small is surprising given the preliminary evidence that indicates that self-forgiveness may have a range of positive implications for individuals. Without further empirical attention, little can be understood about the process of self-forgiveness or how an individual may come to benefit from forgiving themselves. My PhD project consequently seeks to fill such gaps in the psychological literature by both advancing (in line with recent work by Wenzel et al., 2006) and testing a conceptualisation of self-forgiveness as a restorative justice process. |
Additional Research Interests
My research projects in both sociology and social psychology betray an abiding interest in the social sphere, at both the macro and micro level. More specifically, across both disciplines I have investigated responses following harm doing or injustice. My projects have ranged from exploring the implications of refusing to apologize following a wrongdoing, to investigating the sequelae of human rights violations, such as torture. I have examined, for example, the bio-psycho-social model of care developed by the International Rehabilitation and Research Centre (IRCT) in Copenhagen, Denmark. I have also evaluated the use and development of informal group work for women survivors of torture and trauma living in Australia. I consider that my current focus on restorative justice is a natural extension of my previous research interests. |
