Another high-flyer for Scandinavia
Hail
and Farewell! The Scandinavian Studies Centre welcomes Her Excellency
Judith Pead as Australia's Ambassador to Sweden, and non-resident
ambassador to Finland and Estonia. Prime Minister Keating has
recognised the importance of the Nordic area to Australia's
long term economic and diplomatic future by replacing Dr Merrillees
with an equally distinguished Head of Mission. Ambassador Pead
comes to Stockholm with a fascinating career background which
will stand her in good stead. Her recent CV runs as follows:
- 1992-current
Assistant Secretary, South East Asia Branch, Department
of Foreign Affairs and Trade
- 1990-92
Counsellor and Head of Political, Economic and Trade
Policy Section, Australian Embassy Jakarta
- 1986-89
First Secretary, later Counsellor, Australian High Commission,
London
- 1985
Executive Development Scheme
The
Centre congratulates Dr Merrillees on his new post as Ambassador
to Greece, and records that without the active support of Dr
Merrillees and DFAT we would not be in a position to contribute
to both scholarship and trade as we are now. We really appreciate
it!
Farewell also to Bo Heinebäck, whose reward for diligence
as Ambassador of Sweden in Canberra has been appointment to
Pretoria. He has always been a friend and supporter of the Centre,
commenting in his valedictory speech on the eve of leaving Australia:
"There
is one particular area where I think Swedish industry in
Australia could do something to support the Swedish presence
here. At some places around Australia Swedish is being taught
and/or Swedish societal problems studied. I know some Swedish
companies already support these important activities both
in Melbourne and in Adelaide. As a patron of the Melbourne
University Swedish Studies Foundation and supporter of the
Scandinavian Studies Chair in Adelaide I appeal to you to
have a positive attitude if and when you are approached
by fund-raising representatives of these or other similar
Swedish-oriented institutions.
Because this is after all an essential part of an Ambassador's work in Australia,
or in any other country: to promote Swedish interests, to try to increase the
understanding of each other, to add a little bit of fuel to empty tanks or grease
to squeaking wheels of the vehicles that form the traffic on that bridge between
us. That traffic will get increasingly dense as the year 2000 and the Olympic
Games approach."
