Sociology of Health and Illness
Research Interests
• Sociology of Health and Illness
• Gender and the sociology of childbirth
• Work, professions and occupations
• Integrating ‘community’ into policy formation
Maria has maintained a longstanding interest in the organisation of work
in the health sector, especially in the historical development of ‘boundaries’
around the knowledge and work of occupations such as medicine, midwifery
and nursing. She also maintains an ongoing interest in the influence of
structural factors such as gender and class on health. Her recent research
has become increasingly focused on the social and cultural aspects of childbirth
and its meaning for the identity of childbearing women. She has also recently
completed a major evaluation of a new health care worker as a provider of
home based maternity care.
Another research interest concerns the issue of engaging the ‘community’
in the development of social policy. While ‘community consultation’
has become a catch phase of the contemporary era, there is little consensus
about exactly what it means. Working with Dr. June Marks and Associate Professor
Bill Martin, notions of community, community perceptions and community involvement
with respect to water policy are being investigated in a major ARC Linkage
project. Similar issues are being explored in a local government funded
study, conducted with colleagues from Geography and Environmental Health,
which assesses the utility of a range of approaches to ‘community
consultation’.
