Bio

Andrew is Associate Professor in International Relations and Associate Head (Research) of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Before taking up an academic position in 2000, he worked as an intelligence analyst with Australia's Defence Department. In 2005 Andrew was appointed by Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade as a member of the National Consultative Committee for International Security Issues. In 2007 Andrew held the status of visiting professor at Hiroshima University, Japan. From January 2009, he is chair of the International Network of Universities' Academic Committee.

Areas of Expertise:

Global security and strategy, with particular reference to: the use of force in international relations; the proliferation and control of weapons of mass destruction;
the evolving nature of international terrorism

International Relations of the Asia-Pacific region, with particular reference to: the role of nuclear weapons in shaping the region's security environment; the structure, posture, and doctrine of armed forces in the region; the role of strategic alliances and multilateral institutions.

Australian foreign and defence policy, with particular reference to: nuclear diplomacy; regional engagement in the Asia-Pacific; alliance management
