Background
Before taking up an academic position in 2000, Andrew worked as an intelligence
analyst with Australia’s Defence Department. In 2005 he was appointed
by Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade as a member of the
National Consultative Committee for International Security Issues. He is a founding
member of the Australian Council for Strategic Studies, and a member of the
Australian Institute of International Affairs, the Australasian Political Studies
Association and the International Studies Association. In 2007 Andrew held
the status of visiting professor at Hiroshima University, Japan.
Areas of Expertise:
Global security and strategy, with particular reference to:
- The use of force in international relations
- The proliferation and control of weapons of mass destruction
- The evolving nature of international terrorism
The Asia-Pacific region, with particular reference to:
- The role of nuclear weapons in shaping the region's security environment
- The structure, posture, and doctrine of armed forces in the region
- The role of strategic alliances and multilateral institutions in shaping
the regional security environment
